Today's vote on the congressional pay raise is a victory for Speaker Newt Gingrich, who figured out how to take advantage of the taxpayers to win a pay raise for himself and his overpaid colleagues in Congress.
The American people, however, will not soon forget how Gingrich and other congressional leaders greedily stuff their pockets with tax dollars while the federal government is more than $5 trillion in debt. They will not soon forget that our congressional leaders lack the self-discipline and dignified self-restraint needed to act for the common good. The Congress has damaged its moral authority to govern at a time when Congress is slashing many needed health and safety programs that protect all Americans.
